Fascial Sketching

What is a fascial sketch and what should I expect during our 60-minute session?

A fascial sketch is a visual examination utilizing ultrasound technology and elastography to evaluate the fascia throughout multiple regions in the body.  The goal of a fascial sketch is to identify areas where the fascia may be tight, restricted, or dysfunctional, as these issues can contribute to pain, stiffness, or movement problems.  There is no radiation exposure or pain associated with the procedure except for the sensation of cooling gel and or slight sensation of pressure as the ultrasound probe is being applied to the skin.  The technology is just like the one utilized to visualize a baby while still in the womb. In addition to visualizing the fascia under live, dynamic ultrasound imaging, our physician team will also utilize key concepts in musculoskeletal assessment to perform a comprehensive evaluation of your fascial and musculoskeletal health.   These concepts include:

1.Visual Inspection: Observing posture and movement patterns to identify any imbalances or areas where the fascia might be restrictive.

2.Palpation (Touch): Using hands to feel the body’s soft tissues. Our physician will assess the texture, tone, and flexibility of the fascia. Restrictions in fascia may feel like tight bands or “knots,” and the clinician might detect areas where the fascia is more rigid or painful to the touch.

3.Movement Tests: Our physician may guide you through specific movements or stretches to test the flexibility, range of motion, and responsiveness of different body parts. Restrictions in fascia may limit a person’s ability to move freely.

4.Postural Assessment: A fascial survey may also involve evaluating how the body’s fascia impacts posture and alignment. Poor posture may sometimes be the result of fascial tension or imbalances.

5.Observation of Symptom Patterns: If the patient is experiencing chronic pain, stiffness, or discomfort, the practitioner might map the pain’s location and characteristics to help determine if fascia is involved.
