  2. Wear loose clothing.
  3. Be sure skin is cleaned thoroughly prior to the test.
  4. Speak to your referring provider if certain muscle relaxer should be held on day of testing.
  5. EMG/NCS will not affect pacemakers and defibrillators.
  6. EMG/NCS does NOT require fasting. A normal meal schedule may be followed on the day of the test.

No, in order for a physical therapist to provide electrodiagnostic testing service, they must complete a rigorous didactic curriculum through a residency program or mentorship including, 500 clinical studies and 2000 hours of testing to qualify to sit for an examination administered by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). Currently, there are only 269 physical therapists certified nation-wide.

Physical therapists have extensive preparation in the foundational and clinical sciences of gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, muscle and nerve physiology, myology, neurology, and pathology.

Physical therapists who are board certified in EMG/NCS are recognized as qualified providers by major insurance carriers including Medicare, BCBS, and more. Physical therapists have been recognized and listed by Medicare since 2001 as specifically qualified providers of electrodiagnostic testing. This is codified in both federal regulation and various Local Coverage Determinations (LCDs).
